Autumn is a stunning time of year to capture new, family photographs in the great outdoors. The colours are just stunning and with acorns, pine cones and fallen leaves aplenty, nature really does provide so many prompts for natural photographs as you explore as a family.

This autumn family photo shoot I’m sharing today was captured in the beautiful and tranquil gardens of The Yorkshire Arboretum which is a 120-acre parkland located next to Castle Howard. The grounds include lakes and ponds as well as over 7,000 species of trees. It also happens to be very quiet, due to the vast area the park covers, which is perfect for capturing natural, family photographs.

We were blessed with a mild, sunny day which, as the light shined down through the trees, was simply stunning. As we ventured into the parklands looking for the most picturesque setting, the girls enjoyed playing and hiding behind the biggest trees whilst looking for squirrels. I love to take my clients to locations just like The Yorkshire Arboretum for this very reason: there is so much joy to be had exploring and the relaxed format of the sessions make for family photos that are full of personality.

I encourage the children to take the lead and capture their individual portraits in various setting as well as the all-important sibling photographs which usually involve some tickling to bring out their golden smiles!
